I think this is the key point. Success is not about gross income or net profit but about how well we connect with our desired audience. This is not to say that money is unimportant. The more closely writers connect with their audience (there may be exceptions), the more likely some sort of (probably minimum) funding will become available.

If you have no concern about connecting with an audience, you're better off buying lottery tickets.
