I think some artists consciously reveal their regret for previous offenses: Cheyenne Autumn even more than The Searchers. I think everyone should see Triumph of the Will, but as a double feature with Olympia, where Riefensthal undercuts the myth of Aryan superiority via her portrayal of Jesse Owens.
Other artists reveal their offenses without doing so deliberately. These works may be studied as good or great art but with eyes open: Chinatown and Rosemary's Baby show us something about Polanski's shadow side; Crimes and Misdemeanors and Cassandra's Dream shine a light on Allen's amoralism, which in my view permeates all of his films that I've seen.
I don't know of any film that should be banned from viewing, but the question is how we look at it, how we discuss it: Der Ewige Jude is painful viewing, but in my view necessary. Otherwise we excuse its violence through our ignorance.
