I think audiences go to movies to be redeemed, to be freed from the bondage of their everyday lives. The interesting thing about movies is that the audience can find redemption even if the protagonist doesn’t. A tragic ending or failure on the part of the protagonist (e.g. Chinatown) can bring the audience to the edge of the chasm so that the only way forward is that leap of faith over the abyss.
