I taught at Morris Brown (part of the AUC complex) in the 1980’s. The phrase “Morehouse Man” was current then (I assume it still is). There was not a corresponding phrase like “Spelman Woman.” For whatever reason, Morehouse had (from my limited perspective) accrued a kind of masculinity as part of its identity.

The initial resistance to the publication of your original article doesn’t surprise me. “Mean Girls” may not have been the most appropriate or least controversial phrase for the title, but it is essentially a critique of the term “Morehouse Man.” Had you chosen a less challenging title, however, or a more tactful approach, I’m not sure the responses to your article would have been any less vitriolic.
