I remember an interview with CK in which he admits / confesses that he knows that a screenplay is supposed to have three acts. (I.e. that he doesn't care much about traditional structuring.)
But I think that all writers carry within their heads the various strategies of movies they've seen.
Some writers translate these varied approaches into regular patterns--and they become film critics / screenwriting gurus in doing so.
But other writers keep the patterns inside their heads and re-arrange things as they develop their stories. The most successful of these writers tend to get their stories sold and eventually filmed.
