I love this album but I don't particularly like it. I must admit, though, that I admire it a lot more after reading your background and reflections.
Here's a rabbit hole if you have the patience for one more: Indie musician and producer John Vanderslice named one of his albums ("Mass Suicide Occult Figurines") after a phrase from a Neutral Milk Hotel song. (The Vanderslice album contains the single "Bill Gates Must Die" around which Vanderslice built a fascinating false story, pretending that Microsoft was harassing him because of the song, which really has nothing to do with Bill Gates but is about an obsessive Internet porn addict. But that's another rabbit hole.)
