I haven't watched (or avoided) The TV series, but your comparison with Euripides has encouraged me to do so.
I have this question (not so much about Atwood or the adapters but about the forces that they depict):
I've always thought that Euripides relished showing how the misogynist ruler Pentheus enjoyed dressing as a woman in order to spy on the Meneads.
Itseems to me that many of the homophobic / misogynist partiarchalists in modern American and European society (which includes women like Marjorie Taylor Greene and most likely Giorgia Meloni) are acting out of reaction formation--i.e. what they claim to dread the most is what they desire the most.
