I grew up liberal in the 60’s (voted for McGovern). I think that while your characterization of 60’s liberalism is congruent with my experience, I don’t believe current progressivism is that different from what I experienced 5 decades ago (contrary to what current progressives themselves might claim). What has changed is the skein of the opposition. Trump is not Nixon. He’s far more dangerous. Nor is the current crop of Republicans like their 60’s counterparts in name, many of whom opposed the Vietnam War and supported civil rights legislation. Do not blame today’s progressives for the tenor of of illiberalism now besetting us. They are genuine and they are making the best of a very bad situation.
