I didn't know In the Mood for Love (or its director). The company it keeps (and your observations) convinced me to watch it.

I'd recommend Todd Haynes' "Far from Heaven" as a doomed romantic film--it's Douglas Sirk without the wink-wink-nudge-nudge happy ending.
