I came here to see if Dorothy B. Hughes made the list, but Patricia Highsmith is certainly a great choice (I don't know contemporary thrillers, just detective stories). The two modern novels sound very interesting.

Hughes creates amazing intensity with minimal violence / mayhem. She's best known for In a Lonely Place and The Expendable Man, but I recommend Dread Journey as an example of intensifying suspense.
