I also saw the Coppola version in a theatre, with an orchestra in the pit (at the Fox Theater in Atlanta). It was quite enthralling--I didn't think the score was particularly strong but it wasn't a weakness either in my view. You can definitely see the influence on Eisenstein there. A full 9 hour version would probably be quite watchable (with several intermissions).
