I agree that the recent decision is no cause for celebration (except insofar as it could have been worse). Apparently Roberts and Kavanaugh (in joining the liberal justices) kept the door open for further challenges to the Voting Rights Act. The Thomas / Alito dissents preserved the intrinsic discrimination of the previous decisions (going far back beyond Brown vs. BOE).
HOWEVER
The recent decision does (imo) support the efforts of the NAACP, League of Women Voters, and other organizations pushing back against the anti-constitutional / racist interpretations of recent decades.
If we are to make significant progress in re-establishing voting rights, we will have to work hard to undo the judicial retrenchments instituted by McConnell et al.. This means (1) convincing open-minded candidates to run for judicial office and (2) doing the grassroots organizing / education necessary to get these candidates elected.
