Howard Hawks is famous for introducing elements of humor into his adventure films and elements of danger into his comedies. Many of Hawks’ screwball comedies have near-death experiences (Twentieth Century, His Girl Friday, Bringing Up Baby, and others). I think he understood that acknowledging mortality added resonance to the quest of the protagonists in these bubbly comedies.
