Hi Kasey,
I don't know you or your situation (beyond what you describe here--and you write eloquently), so I hope I'm not being presumptuous. I've experienced what you describe, and I would guess that everyone has--that doesn't make it easier, but it does suggest that all the negative programming in our lives comes from people in our past but not from our true selves.
