Here's another trick (often used in the British tv mysteries I watch):

A asks B a question.

B says nothing, or says something that has nothing to do with the question.

This device draws the audience in by making them wonder about what's really going on.

You can't do it all the time (unless you're Harold Pinter), but it's a wonderful device on occasion.
