Haven't seen Close Encounters, The Exorcist, or Iron Giant. Saw The Searchers and Titanic only on TV. Everything else I saw in a theatre (2001 in Cinerama if I remember correctly). You're exactly right. These movies need the big canvas. But even Rear Window (which seems to be a very intimate film visually) benefits from the large format.

I would add Days of Heaven to your list as an ideal film to see on the big screen.
