Going back to an earlier post (When the Protagonist is a Villain), if the villainous protagonist is humanized or treated as a complex character, the virtuous antagonist is often depersonalized or depicted as monolithic or goal-driven rather than beset by competing or conflicting feelings (The Killing, Breaking Bad, The Americans).
