From my jaded, boomer perspective, "Should I Stay" is about half a step above "My Sharona," so I understand and agree with your basic point.

My own outrage is against Oasis' ripoff of Neil Innes. The Oasis non-original "Whatever" https://youtu.be/LA279p9K7GY hews closely to "How Sweet to Be an Idiot" https://youtu.be/nZ9EWcaS7II but with none of the ambiguity or irony, likes the Buggs covering the Beatles https://youtu.be/rwTHCe5rIwM . If you subtract what’s positive in Innes’ song from what’s positive in Oasis’ derivative, you’ll get a negative number. But if you subtract Innes’ monetary revenue from that of Oasis, you should get a tidy sum.

We can argue till doomsday about whether "Stairway to Heaven" borrows from “Taurus,” or whether George Harrison was unaware that he leaned on "He's So Fine" when he wrote "My Sweet Lord," but these derivatives were at the very least acceptable in their own right. "Whatever" is essentially inessential . If it hadn't been attached to an already-successful band, nobody would have noticed it. Damn right I'm pissed.
