From a white person's point of view, the value of acknowledging the participation (and often the sacrifice) of white people is not to make them saviors but to point out that white people who ignored the heroic struggle of black people had no excuse for being silent. If Viola Liuzzo gave up her life, what justification did other white people have for their inaction?
