For some reason, the Rachmaninoff concerto is one of the few classical records my family had in the 60's, so I grew up on it. I didn't know Grimaud (but love Ashkenazy of course)--I think you're exactly right about the fusion of masculine and feminine in that interpretation. It would make an excellend desert island record, but mostly at night.
You may know that the tune became a "hit" in the 40's and 50's as "Full Moon and Empty Arms" (including Frank Sinatra; many of the other variations quite schlocky).
