For most people, politics aren’t about ideology or public service but affiliation: protecting people in your narrow circle and punishing the rest. And white evangelical not-Christianity is about politics not spirituality or sacrifice or benevolence. Christian love is an oxymoron to these people. This is obvious if you contrast black or brown Christianity. Or Quakers or Jains or taoists. Or if you look at how early Christianity started out egalitarian but soon picked up on Paul’s misogyny and became the driving force of patriarchy and xenophobia in the West. We are still fighting the Crusades. Intolerance is our grail.
So why shouldn’t white evangelical not-Christians welcome Trump? He’s one of theirs.
