For me, it's a great film. I haven't seen it since it came out (and on tv at that), but the mood has stayed strong with me ever since--more than I can say for most movies. If The Whales of August had been directed by Ozu (in Japanese with subtitles), cineastes would have been more supportive. It's a treasure everyone should know.
