It seems to me that most of these songs fall into one of several categories:
1. You Had to Be There (limited appeal beyond a few pop characteristics (e.g. slightly catchy melody but not much else--The Ventures).
2. Solidly crafted pop--good back then, still listenable today: “Chain of Fools,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “The Letter,” “Everyday People.”
3. Iconic masterpieces ("Dock of the Bay" of course, "For What It's Worth").
4. Everything / anything else (Badge," "All I Really Want to Do").
