Every moviegoer (in my view) wants a combination of the familiar and the different. The bean counters can only see the allure of the familiar because it's easy to quantify. (not every movie that explores the different will do so engagingly). A studio has to take a chance when betting on the different. But the bean counters seem to be pathologically risk aversive.

Movie X breaks the mold and does well at the box office. Bean Counters: "Let's make another Movie X."

I doubt we'll see a whole lot of Oppenheimer rip-offs (maybe an animated Disney feature about Schrodinger’s cat?), but don't be surprised if the studios (aided by AI) release a spate of Beanie Baby movies.
