Dolly Parton once said "There are only 3 female vocalists: Barbra Streisand, Linda Rondstadt, and Connie Smith. The rest of us are just pretending."

The Connie Smith-Marty Stuart romance is recounted in the Ken Burns series Country Music. It's one of my favorite music stories.

One thing to beware of: much of the early Connie Smith falls into the category of countrypolitan, with schlocky instrumentation and choral vocals from her producer, who was pressured by Music Row to fall in line with the prevalent trends.

Breaking News: Smith has a new album coming out in 5 days, "The Cry of the Heart". 80 years old and still kicking butt.
