Capra films often (maybe always, I'm not sure) feature a dark night of the soul, which is often represented visually by a chiaroscuro image of the protagonist engulfed in black. They're anything but Pollyana-ish.

An aside: I don't understand why Quarterlife didn't find a larger audience. It was a very intelligent and well-plotted series.
