Both liberals and conservatives tend to have grown up with harsh fathers. As adults, liberals usually react against the cruelty of their past by fostering compassion toward others. Conservatives seem to believe that they can placate their stern fathers by becoming cruel themselves. That's what originalism tends to be: gaining paternal approval by reinstating the worst aspects of the founding fathers and rescinding all the gains the Constitution has made in instituting kindness.
