As an aging boomer, I'm more than eager to see these classics retire. Kick them to the curb like a truculent wino if they won't leave gracefully.
But why replace them with new material, when there's so much good stuff from the same era (often tragically eclipsed by these perennial favorites).
Instead of Iron Man, "Eleven Mustachioed Daughters" by the Bonzo Dog Band (1969). A parody of Goth before Goth was cool. https://youtu.be/gOoDU8HkOO4
Instead of Stairway to Heaven, "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" by the Yardbirds (1966). Jimmy Page or Jimmy Page + Jeff Beck? No brainer.
Instead of Hotel California, "I've Had Her" by Phil Ochs (1967)
"Some Misunderstanding" by Gene Clark (1974)
Once you've checked in, you won't want to check out of either of these long form masterpieces.
Instead of Comfortably Numb, "Ice" by Camel (1979). Often compared to David Gilmour, Andrew Latimer has more warmth, even in this frigid song.
Instead of Another One Bites the Dust, "Your Majesty is Like a Cream Donut" by Hatfield and the North (1975). Okay these aren't vaguely similar; I'm choosing the Hatfield number to replace Bohemian Rhapsody.
Instead of Smells Like Teen Spirit, "Train Round the Bend" by the Velvet Underground (1970). Much nastier.
Instead of Alive, "Hospital" by the Modern Lovers (1973). No explanation necessary.
Here's to fresher music, whether it's from the present or the past.
