Any music that enthralls us when we're in an altered state should at the least be interesting when we're not altered. I think Pink Floyd is always interesting (at the very least).
My Floyd listening (based on hearing entire albums--of course I heard the single "See Emily Play" when it came out during my high school years, and I've heard bits and pieces of other albums from time to time) is spotty. In order of auditioning:
* Ummagumma (circa 1969)
* Atom Heart Mother (1970)
* The Dark Side of the Moon (circa 1973)
* Meddle (around 1975 or later)
* A Saucerful of Secrets (probably around 1976)
*Wish You Were Here (found a vinyl copy a few years ago)
So I'm a relatively casual Floyd fan, and heard Wish You Were Here rather late, after I had already formed a mental image of their music.
I thought "Wish You Were Here" was wonderful--more grounded and less ethereal / spacy than I was expecting from the other albums I had heard, and I'm sorry to have missed out on it for so long.
Still planning to catch up on Animals from your recommendations, and The Wall.
