Actually researchers found that Hillary Clinton was quite popular in office but not when she was running for office (and not after the Travelgate issue). (Pew graph). Apparently the act of seeking office made her seem aggressive (plus it brought out more attacks than usual from the Republican right wing media). Considering Sean Hannity had a “Stop Hillary Express” for decades, and Limbaugh and others carried out similar corrosive attack campaigns, it’s surprising she won the popularity vote. Now, as the scapegoat for the 2016 debacle, Clinton hasn’t regained the popularity she had in office, and probably never will in our lifetime.

To the best of my knowledge, no man ever lost favorability simply by running for office. The privilege problem is even worse than what your article describes.
