A very important and thoughtful article.
From the title, I thought you meant how to keep a story from being too shallow. This is probably my biggest problem in crafting a script.
Do you have any thoughts on how to make sure a story has deeper meaning for the audience?
I know the basics about theme, conflict (inner and outer), building a complex character, and structuring the protagonist's quest, but those are decisions the writer makes consciously. I'm wondering if this might not be a problem in the writer's (my) inner being--what I do or think / how I prepare before engaging in all those conscious activities. Quite possibly some of the wonderful interviews here may cover that--I have to admit I'm behind in my GOTS reading. Any pointers or reference to how other writers handle the problem would be very appreciated.
